Stainless Steel Clad Steel Round Wire

Saint Ni Lightning Protection Stainless Steel Clad Steel Round Wire combines a corrosion-resistant stainless steel outer layer with a strong carbon steel core for long-term grounding in coastal, saline-alkali, chemical, and other harsh soils. Designed for horizontal grounding grids, grounding electrode connections, and lightning protection systems, it offers stable conductivity, high mechanical strength, and reduced maintenance requirements.

Saint Ni Lightning Protection Stainless Steel Clad Steel Round Wire is designed for horizontal grounding grids and buried grounding connections in coastal, saline-alkali, chemical and other corrosive environments. It combines a low-carbon steel core with a stainless steel outer layer, providing mechanical strength, stable conductivity and long-term resistance to soil corrosion.

Available in coils or 6 m straight lengths, it can be used for photovoltaic and wind power grounding grids, substations, communication facilities, chemical plants and industrial grounding systems. Saint Ni Lightning Protection supports customized diameters, lengths and connection configurations for both standard and project-specific requirements.

Structure and Performance

Stainless Steel Protection

The stainless steel outer layer completely covers the steel core and acts as the primary barrier against moisture, chloride ions and acidic or alkaline soil. This structure is particularly suitable for buried grounding systems where corrosion of conventional steel conductors can gradually increase maintenance requirements and affect long-term grounding performance.

Steel Core Strength

The low-carbon steel core provides the mechanical strength required for transportation, trench installation, pulling and positioning. Compared with softer conductive materials, the steel core helps the conductor maintain its shape during installation while providing a reliable path for fault and lightning currents.

Continuous Grounding Layout

The round cross-section allows the conductor to be laid continuously along grounding trenches and around equipment foundations. Large coils can reduce the number of field joints, while straight lengths are convenient for smaller sections and areas requiring precise cutting.

Application Areas

Renewable Energy Sites

The wire can be used for horizontal grounding grids at coastal photovoltaic plants, wind farms and other renewable energy facilities. It can be connected with vertical grounding electrodes to create a complete grounding network.

Corrosive Industrial Areas

Chemical plants, wastewater treatment facilities and saline-alkali mining areas often expose buried conductors to aggressive soil conditions. The stainless steel outer layer provides additional protection for long-term underground applications.

Power and Communication Facilities

It is suitable for grounding networks at substations, transmission facilities, communication base stations and radar sites, where continuous grounding conductors are required to connect individual grounding electrodes and equipment.

Project Case

60 MW Coastal PV Project in Quang Ninh, Vietnam

The project was located on coastal tidal flats in northern Vietnam, where the soil had a high chloride concentration and severe salt-fog corrosion conditions. After comparing 5,000-hour salt-spray performance, grounding stability and overall project cost, the contractor selected Φ12 316 Stainless Steel Clad Steel Round Wire in large coils as the horizontal grounding trunk conductor, together with stainless steel-clad grounding rods.

The main ring grounding grid used 100 m coils, with one 2.5 m vertical grounding rod installed every 5 m. The conductor was laid flat in a 0.8 m deep trench and connected to the grounding rods by exothermic welding. Bentonite resistance-reducing material was placed at the bottom of the trench, and the completed joints were protected before layered backfilling. The above-ground sections were marked with yellow-green grounding identification paint, and the grounding resistance was retested annually using the four-pole method.

After three years of operation, no visible corrosion was reported in the coastal high-salt environment, while annual grounding resistance fluctuation remained within ≤0.2 Ω. Compared with the galvanized solution, total lifecycle costs were reduced by 62%, while primary material procurement costs were 43% lower than the copper-clad steel solution. The use of large coils also reduced the number of field joints and increased overall grounding-grid construction speed by approximately 50%. The completed system passed the local specialized inspection.

Installation Guide

Trench Preparation

After positioning the grounding grid, excavate the grounding trench according to the engineering design and distribute the resistance-reducing material evenly along the trench bottom. The trench depth and backfill requirements should follow the applicable local grounding standards and project drawings.

Wire Laying and Connection

Lay the Stainless Steel Clad Steel Round Wire flat inside the trench without excessive twisting or sharp bending. Reserve sufficient length for connection points, then connect the conductor to grounding rods or other grounding components using exothermic welding or suitable grounding clamps.

Backfilling and Testing

After the connection points have cooled and been inspected, backfill the trench with suitable soil in layers and compact each layer. After the complete grounding grid has been installed, conduct segmented grounding-resistance testing and retain the inspection records for project acceptance and future maintenance.

FAQ

What environments are suitable for this product?

It is mainly designed for buried grounding systems in coastal, saline-alkali, chemical and other corrosive soil environments. The actual material selection should be based on local soil composition, moisture and corrosion conditions.

Can it be supplied in large coils?

Yes. Saint Ni Lightning Protection can supply large coils for long-distance horizontal grounding layouts. Straight 6 m sections are also available for projects requiring shorter installation sections.

Can the diameter and length be customized?

Yes. Diameter, length, stainless steel grade and connection configuration can be customized according to project requirements and order quantities.

How should the conductor be connected?

Exothermic welding or suitable grounding clamps can be selected according to the grounding design and local construction requirements. Connection points should be inspected and properly protected before backfilling.

Can it be used with stainless steel-clad grounding rods?

Yes. Using compatible materials for the horizontal conductor and vertical grounding electrode can simplify the grounding-grid design and reduce concerns associated with dissimilar-metal connections.

What is the expected service life?

Service life depends on soil chemistry, moisture, installation quality and joint protection. In suitable conditions, the stainless steel-clad structure is designed for long-term underground service, while highly corrosive environments should be evaluated according to actual soil conditions.
