Installation

Grounding Electrode Connection

The Copper Clad Aluminum Busbar is mainly used for short above-ground transition sections between grounding electrodes and equipment grounding terminals. The copper surface can be connected to compatible metallic grounding components using suitable clamps, bolted connections, or approved joining methods.

Above-Ground Use

The aluminum core should not be treated as an underground grounding electrode. For projects where aluminum conductors are restricted from direct soil contact, the busbar should remain in the specified above-ground transition section and connect the grounding electrode to the grounding system according to the project design.

Project Case

Kazakhstan Wind Farm

Project: 40 MW Wind Turbine Tower Lightning Protection and Grounding Retrofit Project in Aktobe, Kazakhstan.

The project included 36 wind turbine towers, each 90 m high. The contractor selected 40 × 4 mm Copper Clad Aluminum Busbar for the short above-ground connection between copper-clad steel grounding electrodes and the tower grounding system.

Each tower used four copper-clad steel grounding electrodes. The busbar was connected to the grounding electrode with a copper-aluminum bimetallic transition joint and used only for the 0.4 m above-ground transition section. The grounding resistance was retested quarterly using the four-pole method.

After three years of operation, the grounding resistance varied by no more than 0.16 Ω throughout the year. The project reported no excessive heating or visible electrochemical corrosion at the connection points. Compared with the pure copper solution, the overall material cost of the grounding transition system was reduced by 36%, while installation time was reduced by approximately 50%.
