Bronze Grounding Connector for Lightning Protection

Bronze Grounding Connector for Lightning Protection is manufactured by Saint Ni Lightning Protection using high-quality bronze alloy and precision machining technology. Designed for threaded grounding rods, it enables secure rod-to-rod extension for deep grounding systems without welding. With stable electrical conductivity, good seawater corrosion resistance, and reliable mechanical strength, it is widely used in coastal photovoltaic plants, offshore wind farms, ports, chemical facilities, and other lightning protection grounding projects.

Deep grounding projects often require multiple threaded grounding rods to reach the required electrode depth. Saint Ni Lightning Protection manufactures bronze grounding connectors that join rod sections through precision internal threads, providing a practical alternative to on-site welding. The Bronze Grounding Connector for Lightning Protection offers stable electrical conductivity and good resistance to moisture and marine environments, making the connector suitable for coastal photovoltaic plants, offshore wind farms, ports, chemical facilities, and other lightning protection grounding projects.

Deep Grounding Connection Design

The Bronze Grounding Connector for Lightning Protection is designed to join two externally threaded grounding rods end-to-end. Multiple rod sections can therefore be assembled according to the required grounding depth. A typical installation consists of drive head → grounding rod → bronze connector → grounding rod → ground-penetrating drill bit.

Precision internal threads provide secure engagement between rod sections and help maintain alignment during vertical installation. The thickened sleeve structure is designed to withstand normal installation loads when impact is transferred through the dedicated drive head.

Electrical and Corrosion Performance

Bronze combines good electrical conductivity with resistance to moisture and marine exposure. This makes it suitable for grounding connections installed in coastal and humid environments, helping maintain electrical continuity at the threaded joint during long-term service.

When bronze is connected with copper-clad steel, stainless steel, or other dissimilar metals, galvanic corrosion must be considered according to soil chemistry, chloride concentration, moisture, and material compatibility. For highly corrosive sites, additional protection such as anti-corrosion asphalt tape can be applied around the connection according to the project design.

Installation Method

Clean the external threads of the grounding rods before assembly. Screw the rods into both ends of the connector and tighten them fully. Install the drill bit at the bottom and the drive head at the top, then use a grounding hammer to drive the complete assembly vertically to the required depth. After installation, connect the grounding grid, backfill the joint area with screened fine soil, compact it in layers, and complete the grounding resistance test.

Where It Fits Best

This solution is suitable for deep grounding projects in coastal photovoltaic plants, offshore wind farms, port facilities, chemical industrial parks, oil and gas sites, power stations, and other locations exposed to moisture, salt, or corrosive soil. Its modular threaded structure is also suitable for remote projects because standard-length rods can be transported separately and assembled directly on site.

Real Project Application

28 MW Coastal Photovoltaic Deep Grounding Project in Sulawesi, Indonesia

The site was located near the coastline with relatively high chloride ion content, and the grounding system required a burial depth of 4 meters. The project used Φ17.2mm bronze grounding connectors with threaded copper-clad steel grounding rods, a drive head, and a ground-penetrating drill bit.

The rods were assembled to a total length of 4 meters and driven vertically into the soil. A 70 mm² copper-clad steel stranded wire was used for the horizontal grounding network, while a 25 mm² tinned yellow-green insulated copper stranded wire connected the substation and rooftop brass lightning rod. The joint areas were backfilled with screened fine soil and compacted in layers.

Ground resistance was retested annually using the four-point method, with Chinese-English material and salt-spray durability reports prepared for acceptance by the local power authority. After three years of operation, no significant corrosion was observed at the threaded sleeve connections, and the grounding resistance remained stable and within the required range.

The modular solution avoided on-site welding, simplified transportation and installation, and reduced the need for future excavation and component replacement. The project was subsequently promoted as a standardized grounding solution for similar coastal photovoltaic projects in the region.

Installation and Maintenance Considerations

The Bronze Grounding Connector for Lightning Protection should not be struck directly by a grounding hammer. A dedicated drive head should be used to transfer impact force and protect the threaded connection.

Before installation, inspect the internal and external threads for contamination, deformation, or excessive oxidation. After installation, grounding resistance should be periodically tested according to the project maintenance plan. In highly corrosive soil, the joint should receive additional protection where required.

FAQ

Q1: Can it be used with smooth grounding rods?

No. The connector is designed for grounding rods with compatible external threads.

Q2: Can the connector be directly hammered?

No. Impact should be applied through the dedicated drive head to prevent deformation or thread damage.

Q3: How is grounding resistance tested?

Grounding resistance should be tested according to the project specification and applicable local requirements. In the Indonesia project, the system was periodically tested using the four-point method to monitor long-term grounding performance.

Q4: Is galvanic corrosion a concern?

Yes. When dissimilar metals are connected, galvanic corrosion should be evaluated based on soil conditions and material compatibility. Additional anti-corrosion protection may be required in high-chloride environments.

Q5: Can documentation be provided for project acceptance?

Yes. Saint Ni Lightning Protection can provide relevant material and product test documentation according to project requirements. For the Indonesia project, material and salt-spray durability documentation was prepared for local power authority lightning protection acceptance.
