Exothermic Welding Powder for Electrical Earthing

Saint Ni Lightning Protection manufactures exothermic welding consumables for Exothermic Welding Powder for Electrical Earthing, providing a practical solution for permanent connections between copper, copper-clad steel, grounding rods, copper busbars, and other grounding conductors. The material uses high-purity copper oxide, ultrafine aluminum powder, rare-earth deoxidizing alloy, and specialized slag-forming agents. The formulation is designed to provide a stable thermite reaction and sufficient molten metal for complete mold filling.

This grounding welding consumable generates high-temperature molten metal through an exothermic thermite reaction. When used with the corresponding graphite mold, Exothermic Welding Powder for Electrical Earthing fuses grounding conductors into a solid metallic connection without bolts, clamps, or external electrical power. Individual ignition powder and double-layer vacuum-sealed aluminum foil packaging help protect the material against moisture during storage and transportation.

The reaction temperature can reach approximately 2500°C, while the reaction itself typically takes only a few seconds. After natural cooling, the formed joint provides continuous electrical conductivity and is suitable for long-term buried or exposed grounding applications.

Key Advantages

Stable Exothermic Reaction

The controlled formulation helps maintain consistent combustion and molten-metal formation. Deoxidizing and slag-forming components assist in separating impurities and producing a dense weld with reduced risk of porosity and incomplete fusion.

Permanent Electrical Connection

The exothermic process forms a metallic fusion joint rather than relying on mechanical contact pressure. Properly executed connections can maintain stable electrical continuity and reduce concerns associated with bolt loosening or contact degradation.

Wide Conductor Compatibility

The Exothermic Welding Powder for Electrical Earthing can be matched with different graphite molds for bare copper, copper-clad steel, aluminum-clad steel, copper busbars, and grounding rods. Different powder grades are available according to conductor size and connection configuration.

Easy Field Installation

No welding machine, generator, or external electrical supply is required for the reaction. The system is suitable for substations, energy storage facilities, mountainous areas, underground trenches, and other locations where power access is limited.

Moisture-Proof Packaging

Each package contains separate ignition powder and uses double-layer vacuum-sealed aluminum foil packaging. This helps protect the material during transportation and storage. Moisture-affected powder should not be used.

Standard Installation Process

1. Clean and completely dry the grounding conductors.

2. Place the conductors into the correct graphite mold and align the connection.

3. Add the specified powder quantity according to the mold specification.

4. Add the ignition powder and securely close the mold.

5. Ignite the material and allow the reaction to finish.

6. Allow the mold to cool naturally before opening.

7. Remove slag and clean the mold before the next welding operation.

Correct powder dosage and conductor preparation are essential for consistent weld quality.

FAQ

Q1: What conductors can be connected?

The Exothermic Welding Powder for Electrical Earthing can be used with bare copper, copper-clad steel, aluminum-clad steel, copper busbars, and grounding rods when matched with the appropriate mold and powder grade.

Q2: Can the powder be used on wet conductors?

No. Conductors must be cleaned and completely dried before welding. Moisture can rapidly vaporize during the high-temperature reaction, causing spattering, porosity, or incomplete fusion.

Q3: Does using more powder produce a stronger joint?

No. The powder quantity must match the mold and conductor specification. Excessive powder may cause molten-metal overflow and spattering, while insufficient powder may result in incomplete fusion.

Q4: Can moisture-affected powder be used?

It is not recommended. Moisture can affect reaction stability and welding performance. Clumped or moisture-damaged material should be discarded according to applicable safety requirements.

Q5: Does residual slag affect the next welding operation?

Yes. Residual slag can reduce the effective mold cavity and affect molten-metal filling. The mold should be cleaned thoroughly after each welding operation.

Actual Engineering Application Case

New Electrical Grounding Grid Project for the Coastal 110 kV Energy Storage Step-up Substation

The project was located near the coastline, where soil salinity was relatively high. The grounding system had a 40-year design life, and all copper-clad steel stranded wire and vertical grounding electrode connections were required to use exothermic welding instead of bolted connections.

For conductor sizes from 16 to 120 mm², corresponding No. 32 to No. 150 powder grades were selected. Molds and conductors were dried before welding in damp trenches, while completed joints were sealed with anti-corrosive conductive paste.

More than 4,100 grounding points were completed. According to the project data, the welds were full and free of visible porosity and inclusions, while third-party testing confirmed stable grounding resistance.

After seven years of operation, inspected joints showed no oxidation or corrosion holes. The project reported no lightning-related equipment damage, while consumable procurement costs were reduced by 35% and construction efficiency nearly doubled compared with similar projects using standard welding powder and mechanical clamps.
